- <p> DIED. JOHN HENRY WEIDNER, 81, Dutch-born resistance leader
- during World War II; in Los Angeles. At the brutal peak of the
- Nazi occupation of Europe, Weidner organized the "Dutch-Paris"
- underground network that smuggled desperate Jews and downed
- Allied airmen to the safety of Spain and Switzerland--more
- than a thousand rescues in all. His daring earned him medals
- from France, Belgium, Britain and the U.S.--and the ultimate
- tribute, a 5 million-franc price on his head issued by the Gestapo.
